Decades ago that may have been the case, but with modern technology and anesthetics you won’t experience any more pain than if you went to have a cavity filled. The pain from a severe toothache, often caused by damaged tissues in the tooth, can be easily remedied when an endodontist removes the damaged tissue (or infected pulp) through root canal treatment. Afterwards, the tooth is filled with a cavity or a crown is inserted. In addition, endodontists are experts in pain management, and most cases can be treated quickly and comfortably.

This is simply not true. There is no valid research linking root canals to illness anywhere else in the body.

If possible, it is always the best option if you are able to save your natural teeth. Nothing that is artificial can replace the functionality or natural look of a real tooth. Endodontic treatment has a very high success rate and treated teeth can last a lifetime.

Just because your tooth started hurting and then stopped doesn’t mean there is not an infection inside the tooth. The tooth may have a chronic infection that has not reached the bodies threshold for pain for. Prior to performing any root canal, the endodontist will thoroughly examine all radiographic and clinical findings to determine if a root canal is indicated.

This all depends on the type of procedure and the tooth that is infected. Usually it is about 1 – 2 hours. Although rare, it is a possibility that a 2nd appointment is needed.
