If the tooth isn’t bothering me, why do I need a root canal?

Just because your tooth started hurting and then stopped doesn’t mean there is not an infection inside the tooth. The tooth may have a chronic infection that has not reached the bodies threshold for pain for. Prior to performing any root canal, the endodontist will thoroughly examine all radiographic and clinical findings to determine if a root canal is indicated.
